Clovis Bifaces....
Although mine (from a Clovis site) is a miniature version of the Fenn example, on right, I thought the similarities were striking.

That Clovis cache that was recently found near Denver had some of those that were huge! They looked as big as dinner plates. That's a fine artifact!

Clovis dudes further west must have been munchkin dwarfs. I've seen those from Clovis sites all over the place but they are always big like they were preforms. This is no preform. It has worked edges with use wear. Little fingers. Kind of like that Base Tang I found at Pipe Creek.

obsidian disks
Nice little piece! looks like a ninja slicing frisbee, or something from under Odd Job's hat. Seriously, I remember having a discussion, possibly with you, about biface roundish disks and their association with Paleo areas. Is there any sign of grinding that would support hafting with cordage, or could it have been wedged into a bone, antler, or wooden handle? Looks like it could do some really controlled scraping. Those Paleo guys made everything so well, that it is hard to imagine them as just daily use tools.
How big were the disks in the Fenn Cache? Huge? I don't recall seeing them. Question: did the Paleo Indians ever have time or reason to make effigy items by flaking technology? I don't believe to have ever seen any Paleo artifacts that were non-functional as tool kit items. Very nice! Anyone find these in other lithics?

The Fenn example is very large, like the size of a frisbee or a dinner plate. They are both flaked the same way and show similar use wear though. Here is another picture of the same Fenn tool in someone's hand for size reference.

The problem with attributing them is that round-to-ovate bifacial flake cores were made, off and on, throughout time in many places. I've noted them in site collections that had no identifiable paleo components.
Which is not to say that it isn't a paleo item. It might be. Only that, out of context, in many areas, it's not culture-specific. |
