West Side Oregon Pictographs

These Pictographs are near West Side Oregon just out of Lakeview. I don't think a lot of people know about them. There are three designs on this one but the bottom one is washed out pretty good. I also found a mortar and pestle near the site with the pestle just sticking out like in the pic.

That is the first time I ever saw a pictograph AND a petroglyph forming the same image. I'm surprised it isn't more common. I just never saw one like that.
Very cool.

I recently "formatted" my memory card and it erased the entire card. To make a long story short, I lost everything and with it, about 5 different paintings. I think I can find all but maybe one again. All of them are painted in red? Is this the norm?

Red ochre was used overwhelmingly more than anything else.
I have seen a few in white, yellow, and black.

What is the difference between a pictograph and a petrogliph?

A petroglyph is pecked or scratched into the surface of the rock. The outer dark layer is removed to reveal a lighter color beneath.
A pictograph is painted.

Gotcha. I always wondered that? Most all I know about are painted, I know of one that may be pecked in. A lot of people know about it. I like to photograph ones that nobody knows about. It is crazy how many of these paintings are around. My neighbor has several caves and I see black coloring on the walls/celings. Is this smoke risidue from old fires?
