a Visit to the Museum

Well, I actually have Saturday & Sunday off this Weekend... which, unless requested for a Trip, I do not normally get working in retail... (I actually prefer week Days off..)

So I decided Yesterday to visit a Nearby Museum that I have heard of, yet never been to...

the Chumash Indian Museum
In Thousand Oaks/West Lake Village, just west of my home....
It's a Small, interpretive Center that is about the Chumash Indians and their Culture... a Small, Very well displayed Museum.. I was basically by myself in the Museum, except for the Lovely attendant at the front Desk, her name is Liz..

The Displays are well arranged, with very good Lighting.. Plenty of Artifacts and the like, plus plenty of dioramas & Paintings about various aspects of the Chumash and Their World... Of Course I was Drooling over the projectile points on display, particularly the Display box loaded with Vandenberg Contracting Stem type points... But there were a Ton of Manos & Metates.. plus some Mortar & Pestles..... There's even a life size replica of a Tomol, the Plank wood Boats the Chumash built to travel between the Main land & the Northern Channel islands.. the Greatest Boats built by any Native Americans Anywhere....

They have a Glass case with a Chumash Man and another with a Chumash Woman, full sized and looking pretty cool.. the Chumash woman is a Hottie...(LOL)
I purchased a few books in the Gift Shop as well....

I certainly plan on going back, to make up for not visiting the Museum sooner....
Their website is Chumash Indian Museum - Welcome to the Chumash Indian Museum website

Here's some Photos for Your Viewing enjoyment...

Those "models" don't look very "Chumash like", but the dioramas are neat. Most Chumash points that I have found are rather "clunky" compared to the finer points of the Maidu, Miwuk, and Yokuts. Lots of heavy Monterey Chert stuff.

MIKE,

Yeah, not exactly Chumash looking.. but they are alright...

The Early Points, like the Vandenberg, Palamas & Diablo Canyon Points are often Clunky... But there are often enough very well done ones to make one Happy...

The Later, Arrowhead Point types, = Malaga Cove, Canalino Triangle, Channel island Barbed are often Perfect in every aspect.... And they are from the Same Monterey Chert... Depends on time frame and who was Flaking them I'd guess....

Hey, dean-o. I'm kinda digging on the Hottie's basket! Provocative!
Nice to see the points from the Southern half of the state. That point top center looks very Ano-Nuevo-esque...

Yike!!!!!! HS if you try it you'll need ARMED company. You guys read about the yahoos up near Santa Barbara digging at night with lights? Of course maybe you could say you were just lookin' for some of those hot Chumash women like in the museum.

The last time I was around there we were diving for lobster and scallops. Both were HUGE. We explored a underwater cave off San Miguel that I know has artifacts in it, but I couldn't see anything for all the sea growth. We creeped ashore and wandered around for hours in our skivvies. Plenty obvious activity, but the fear got into me and we swam back to the boat. You have to land surreptitiously and do the deed by moonlight, something we have grown comfortable with. Lights equal activity, and can draw unwanted "vultures".

I know one can fly over to Santa Cruz, to overnight camp at a few locations.. the trick would be how to not look obvious regarding our "activities" ... I'd bring my Flyrods with me and am of the mind this would work.. but you are soo right.. we'd have to be extremely careful no matter how we went about it... I've a fair amount of Manuscripts regarding the various islands and their Archeology... there is a large amount of sites on most all the Islands.. (except, perhaps, Anacapa... steed cliffs allowed only a few locations).. Actually the Chumash are of the mind they came into being on the Islands and latter where brought over to the Mainland... Pretty cool Creation story actually...

We'll have to correspond about a possible visit... I say we go for it...
