My Son has been Knapping

He's been making lots of Gravel but He is getting better..I told him to make stuff that you'd like to find and that is type correct for the Region we hunt..It's a good start to learning as I Find my Overstreet out in the Garage near the Knapping area He's also asking good questions like..how/why are the bases ground on Paleos. He's having a hard time with the flaking.. Hard to make a 13 yo understand you don't learn to collateral flake in one session..
A couple of his recent points:

Cool, looks like he has gotten the hang of it pretty darn good. When my grandson was about fourteen, I showed him the basics and he was making points with a hammerstone and a piece of deer horn in no time at all.

He'll be encouraged by your guys' kind words..Thanks

Our Member Marcus really took the time to help him this summer and it propelled him to another level of interest in a month.

Marcus..Again THANK YOU for your time..You are a great teacher and you planted a seed that is so positive you may never know the affect. "Dad's" guidance is so often "slippery" and disregarded but another respected adult can move mountains with a kid sometimes and this was a classic example.

I agree that knapping is a big component in understanding what your looking at in the field. I hope the insight gives him a better appreciation for hunting. It has helped me in a big way to see things a in a different light regarding Lithic Scatter around sites.

They looke really good. I've seen a few videos on youtube that look pretty instructive, if he hasn't looked there yet.

That is just great Trask! Tell your son, if you want, that a fellow member (me) was cutting my fingers to shreds when I was a Junior in High School trying to knapp obisidian with a rusty nail! I didn't attempt it again, but it is a skill I would have liked to have acquired. He is well on his way to discovery.
