the Mammoth & the Turtle...
I posted these photos on Forums last year.. but figured I'd let folks here see them and possibly put in their feedback about them.
As a Good deal of you know, I have a site that a 10 minute drive (and a 45 minute Hike) from my Home... I have been rewarded by this site pretty good and it is constantly teasing me with Great Potential finds in the Future. The Geology of the Area is most interesting, erosion shaped Mesozoic Sandstone is all over the site, including the High cliffs and hills behind the site... Well some of these Shaped sandstone look most interesting.. There is one Outcropping which looks a great deal like the Head of a Mammoth, so I have named it the Mammoth Head it is directly West of one of the Higher areas of the Site.. Once one sees it, it is always noticed quickly when one comes into the Site. I know there where No mammoths left in this area when the Site was first occupied (Based on the fact the oldest Point type I've found there are Vandenberg Contracting Stems.. But I am certain That the Indians noticed the Face, maybe the ears as well.. i am of the Mind that it was of spiritually importance to them, whatever they thought the face did represent... The other "animal Rock" in the Area (actually south of the Site proper, but one has to hike past it to arrive at the Site) looks very much like a Turtle, so We Named it the Stone Turtle.. I've included a few photos for everyone's viewing enjoyment... What are Folks' views on the "animal Stones".. do you think as i do that they were of Spiritual importance to the Inhabitants ????

Not feeling you onthe mammoth, but the turtle is plain. As to significance, who knows, but these early people were anamists, and felt certain ones had certain powers.I think the early art of these people is under-recognized and under appreciated. Early people all over the world produced are, whether it was stationary or art mobiliere, so i don't see why paleoindians were any different. Many effigies of birds and other animals made of wood and preserved in a bog were found in Fla.?Marcos island,i believe was the site.Out west, you guys have many rock wallsetc where people have been expressing themselves for millenia, but here in the deep south we don't have those, and i believe art mobiliere was frequently made, out of stone as well as wood as that was what was available . I'll post some soon, and im sure i'll get a lot of WTF,but WTF?

I see what you are refering to in the last picture and the Turtle is very obvious, but in the very first picture the face at that angle looks very human to me and looks like an Indian with his hair pulled back and it looks like there is something in his mouth like maybe he is smoking a Pipe. You can see the two eyes and the big, broad nose very distinctly. Anyone else see that?

I see it. Is that smoke coming out of his pipe?

Yes, leave off the ears and it is very much a Human face.. actually noticed that later on. The Mammoth face was what i noticed first ~ so i stick with that name. Maybe change the name to Mammoth Joe???
![]() That's Not Smoke.. it's a bush.. My Friend, Devlin, is a Archaeology Major at a Local College. He's seen the Photos and is very interested in bringing in some climbing gear and ascend to the base of the face and dig around in the Soil. He believes there is most likely offerings buried there. My Nephew Cody managed to scramble up there (second Picture in the original post, see part of Cody at the bottom right??). He found nothing, but noted there was a good deal of Soil and rock that had sheared off from above... But Devlin said that we are still going to climb up there and search the Base of the Face... Here's an interesting tidbit about the face.. the Eyes.. Turkey Vultures nest in them...

Its the Patron... Just kidding. Both rock formations are very compelling. I see them clearly. I agree native people gave things like natural rock formations a lot of thought. We certainly do in this day and age with the small amount of time we spend outdoors relatively speaking. They must have stared at them 24/7...literally.
