The Windover Site (Florida)

An extremely (IMO) interesting read, if you're not familiar with it.

Interesting stuff indeed.

The fabric used to wrap the dead is the oldest flexible fabric ever found in this part of the world. The "yarn" was made with fibers from native plants--probably palmetto or queen palm--using at least seven different complex weaves that required the use of some type of loom.

Four kinds of close twining, one kind of open twining, and one type of plaiting can be seen in the mats, bags, and basketry recovered from the site. Clothing woven by the inhabitants of Windover Bog on looms included hoods and burial shrouds, as well as some fitted clothing and many rectangular or squarish clothing articles.

research has shown that the mtDNA lineages reported are absent in all other prehistoric and contemporary Native American populations studied to date.

The DNA recovered from the Windover people shows that they were not related to modern Native American peoples.
The American Bog People of Windover: 9,000 Year-Old Burials Preserved in Peat Bog in Florida

Here's where I smell a rat : after determining that these people were not ancestral to today's Native Americans, a veil of silence descended over the whole matter. Although 91 skulls (excellent indicators of ancestry) were unearthed, not a single one was illustrated in the lengthy site report, and it was declared that (bear in mind, they had 91 skulls -- many with intact brain tissue) "no more recoverable DNA existed" for further testing.

Sounds like Kennewick Man all over again. Or maybe I'm just suspicious (?)

I saw a video with the original researcher discussing the DNA evidence. The first 5 DNA sequences in a row were "European". No additional info has been provided that i know of.Much of N. African DNA is also considered "European" i would love to see some additional DNA info or cranial anatomy evaluations. I , too find it that the "Pros" are being very close-mouthed about this, and it makes me wonder????? African bottle gourd was also found with some of the remains...

That is a great link. I love watching how DNA changes everything we thought we knew. It is a shame how the veil of silence can descend when 'facts' are shattered. A lot like when people thought the earth was the center of the universe and then here comes Galileo.

This is a shame. They probably spend about a million dollars a day on football in Florida:
"The State of Florida allocated nearly a million dollars for excavation and preservation, but now, a wealth of information lies cataloged and boxed at Florida State University because the state cannot provide additional funds for research. Additional research could tell much about the native Americans who lived near a small pond 4,000 years before Christ was born and 2,000 years before the pyramids were built or ceramics came into existence."

Typical Florida "so called professional" attempts in this state at least, to keep us common folks abay and not take away any of their thunder. There is nothing at this time in this state that I have personally discovered that I would share with any of them in charge at this time (though I have found nothing history changing or never known about anyway).

I remember when this was hot news. It was seemingly to me assumed every pond in Florida held unknown burials that had been over looked, by the verbage being reported! To my knowledge nothing else has came to light in the same context else where in the state or even that area.
Which to my thinking puts this group of people different right off the bat from the norm in Florida? Proven fact, monkey see , monkey do....does not seem like it in this case, Seemingly very few other monkeys of the day saw what this group was doing and copied their ritual on burials?
They probably were strangers in the land?

Hey Gomer, ever see any of their artifacts published anywhere? I would like to see their toolkit.

Seems like there were a few pins and a few unusual small stone items like pendants or plummets that were shown but right at the moment not sure where I saw that at. If I can find or remember I will hollar.
