first Hunt of the Year, Friday the 13th...

well, fortunately as I am not a Knights Templar in France, friday the 13th is of no concern to me...
Today was My first hunt of 2012.. and my first hunt with Hollywood Flyfisher a.k.a. Ben.. I had talked with Ben last year about get together to hunt local sites, he had hunted a few times last year, but not all that successful.. So i figured I could hunt with him locally and , at the very least, put samples of the various colors of Monterey Chert, Quartzite, etc.. in his hands so He could become familiar with the Local Lithics, thus helping him hunt around here.
I picked him up at his humble abode, which turns out is 2 miles away from my House. I took him to the High Grave site to the North. we geared up and hiked in the Mile to the "#1" site.. i took him to an area where i knew we would find lots of small flakes and pieces. Soon enough i was picking up examples of the Chert and Quartzite and handing them to Ben..
We worked over to the south edge of the rise and as we worked down the slope, Ben found a Nice Quartzite Malaga Cove, in a bright brick red color... His First nearly complete Local point!!!
We worked down the slope, searching any open spot between the various bushes and I found a very light colored Vandenberg.. which i almost walked past, but automatically bent to pick it up. We worked further down the slope to an area i had not hunted at all.. and i found a rough point made from dark Chert.. it seems to be a Houx...
We hunted over on area #2 but only found some flakes and small pieces... except for the Coyote(?) skeleton that Ben located.. he kept the complete skull, so hopefully he'll post a photo of that..

It was a Great day and turned out better then i thought (as we've not had any rain in sometime)... and now I have a new hunting pal (and flyfishing as well).
So for anyone who thinks Friday the 13th. is a bad luck Day.. I don't buy it at all....

Hey Dean glad you had a good day and found a local to hunt points with. I go alone quite often but I like it better when I have company.
I am also glad your Friday the 13th went better for you then mine did. I don't believe in that crap either BUT the first thing yesterday morning I was trying to put a gas tank back in a boat and since my main guy quit the other day the girl that works for me was helping all she could, long story short I dumped about 2 gallons of gas down my crotch. Soaked the front of my jeans and I live 45 minutes from my shop. Things went downhill from there so I am glad the 14th is here.

yeah, last Winter we get Record rain fall locally (around 25 inches on my gauge at the house) and i don't find One complete point at High Grave.. then the 1st. hunt of this year and we score 3 complete points.. I do not understand that, as I did hunt in the location Hollywood found his Malaga & I found the Vandenberg earlier last year..really bizarre indeedy.
That Vandenberg is the second exhausted one i found at that site.. resharpened down to a stub. I find exhausted points interesting indeed.. the Houx is made from what i refer to as "cruddy Grade" Monterey Chert.. but the maker spent the time knapping it it into a workable point.

that skull is interesting Ben.. it'll look good when you clean it up.

We have some rain supposed to come in today or tomorrow.. so i will hope for the best. Ben & i are planning some exploration to a few locations I have been wanting to visit for sometime now.. but better to go with someone else as one location is about 3 miles hike in to and I just figured it is not a good idea to go solo to the spot... we shall see.

Thanks everyone, it was a fun day and i enjoyed hunting with ben...

Looks like you guys had fun.
I hunt by myself most times ,But it makes it more enjoyable when I can share.
