atlatl spur and another mano

Went to a new site the other day where the cattle have been active and found the mano in a depression that the cattle used for dusting/rolling or whatever it is they do in these shallow scrapes. The atlatl spur was very shocking.....I picked it up before I knew what it was, so no in situ. My eye picked up the small rounded half-ring on the spur tip and I thought "that looks manmade". After looking at it more closely, I could easily see where it had been smoothed flat for mounting and had a wide, shallow hafting groove around 3/4's of it. I still can't believe I found it......one in a billion chance, especially since all the surrounding area is similar small rocks, sand and cowpies. I think these are rare, or at least rare because they are not what I typically look for. I never go out hunting with the hopes of finding an atlatl spur....heck, I don't even think about it. Just one of those happy days! I did a little research, and I think the archy's call this a Type 1. I think us avocalional collectors call them "snake heads".

Sure looks like the real deal to me. You can definitely see the 'snakehead' shape on that last shot of it. That's really neat the way they finished off the spur end for a more secure socket fitting. Sincere congrats on a most excellent find. Happy day to you!

Thanks everyone! I sure don't expect to find another one in this lifetime. Now, if I had found a complete Clovis, I would have been hooting and hollering and really carrying on, but with this thing, it was kind of anti-climatic. Weird.

Congrats on the spur!!! Really like the "extra" on the nose, where it flares out a little more than the ones I find. Don't know why the stone spurs are not more wide spread, with the atlatl used across the country, only thing I can figure is the spur was carved into the end of the atlatl, so no additional stone was needed or the spurs were made from bone which would deteriorate over time. Nice to see someone else find one of these unique artifacts!!!!!!!!!!!
