The Purple Wilson

Feel like I've got an old friend back, thanks to Mark Adams .... thanks!

This purple Wilson was found at the late Keith Brown's "Golden Sands" site in Lee county. Keith showed it to me years ago, it resurfaced in Marks hands, who was kind enough to let me trade him out of it when he found out how bad I wanted it. X- Keith Brown, Dave Jones, Bill German, Mark Adams.

Keith saw something in this point that I didn't really understand at the time, but I think I do now. Wilson's are rare to begin with, this one is even more rare because it is heat treated and was never resharpened. I looked through my frame and now realize that about 10% of the Wilson points in it are heat treated. Probably less than 10% are not heavily resharpened. In other words it's a 1 in a 100, unresharpened, heat treated 10,000 year old paleo point ... very rare and even more special to me being a point that Keith Brown collected.

It is made of the local river cobble, which is an Edwards chert, that can still be found in Bluff creek along side the site. The heat treating really brought out the color. Neat to see the inclusion that goes through it. Also neat to see the flaking on an early stage example.

Thanks,
David

Awesome point David. I'd like to see some of your Wilson points in person sometime. I think you can get a lot better idea about a point in hand than from a picture. Just want to see if any of the points I have been finding at the lease might be Wilson's.
