the Birthday Hunt

well my friends, yesterday was my birthday and i thought a Hunt locally would be in order.. so I had made plans with Hollywood Flyfisher / Ben to visit the High Grave site again, as we had done pretty good a week earlier there.

Well, Ben had some volunteer work to tend to in the Morning (Southern California Steelhead restoration project) and agreed to meet me there. I arrived, slung my day pack and headed in..
I received a phone call from my flyfishing pal, Artin, and I chatted with him for about 20 minutes about the 2 of us starting up an online Flyfishing/ tying Business together. as soon as I hung up, Ben called , he had finished his work earlier then expected.. so i waited for him to hike to the location, which was at the northern end of the site..

we went for serious bushwhacking.., a full tilt hunting activity which requires you to crash thru the often thick brush and hunt the smallest of clearings. the advantage of this Commando tactic is that none of the Hikers, dog walkers, Bike riders will ever get into these small clearings, so the odds are one can find points or other artifacts.. (hopefully)!!!

Here's Ben searching diligently amoungst one of the more open areas, even without the brush and such the Grasses can be really thick... no place for "fair Weather" point hunters...

with the warm weather we've had since about Xmas, the local plants are starting to grow and leaf out , in winter. Here's our personal favorite local Plant : Poison Oak.. Yummy!!

we did not score on any points like we did a week earlier, Ben and myself each finding a section of a Malaga Cove, plus i found a section of a Scallop Shell.. but it was a Fine day to hunt.. a pending storm had cast a hazy overcast on the day, the temps were more like a balmy Winter day and other then hitting the water to pitch flies, Hunting points with a good friend is a perfect way to spend my Birthday..

DEAN ~~~

[Oh Yeah, Ben found a site in the next valley from ours, he found a complete Point and a heartbreaker, plus the usually handful of lithic materials.. we are planning a Hunt there next week together.. perhaps if enough of you ask Ben, he'll post photos of his finds from "High Sinai".. ]

That's great that you were able to spend your B-day in the best preferred way possible. The 'bushwacking' sounds like an adventure in itself. The artifacts will come back around another time. Happy Birthday and good luck in the future.

'High Sinai' - sure sounds very interesting. How about it Ben?

happy birthday Dean-o! Always a great way to spend that day. Now that we got rain, Too-tall and I will be out walking in mud tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll find some objects that demand a photo...
