Bluff Shelter Basket
Hi, I am new to the forum. I have not been seriously hunting artifacts for very long, but recently found a woven basket in a bluff shelter in the Arkansas Ozarks. It will probably be my best find ever, but that ain't going to stop me from looking for more.

Thanks, I lucked onto it, went exploring on a friends find and was climbing around some bluff shelters and there it was. The bluffs produce a natural salt and I believe that is why it was preserved so well. Can't tell from the picture but there are two pieces in it roughly the same size stacked on top of each other.

To be very honest, I was very ignorant of what I had found. I was just carrying it around like it was nothing, I thought it may have been modern, but just there for a long time. I grabbed it just in case. I rode with my friend on the way back home and my kids rode in another vehicle. Well I placed it in back of the Yukon my kids was in thinking it would be safe, I was told later my 4 year old was climbing all over it. I am lucky he didn't destroy it. I have spoken to many people way more knowledgable that myself, and thats what they say, an extremely rare find in this part of the country, out west it the dry climates they are more prevelent.

Thats is a rare find. Might be some sandals or arrow shafts in that shelter, did you finish hunting it good.
In West Texas they lay screen wire on the floors and blow the floor away to expose all the perishable artifacts, but I doubt that would work in your area. Congrats and welcome to the site. |

Awesome,So rare, might be able to have someone ID the culture by fiber and weave.
You might want to contact a professional to find out how best to preserve and care for it.
