Found some Deep South Candy today...

My wife and I hunted our fav gravel bar for a couple of hours today and found this group of woodland to archaic points with the usual pottery. Water has fluctuated wildly so we haven't been out much this month. The last photo is what I call a "skimmer." My notion is that the rapid flow of waters causes some points to skim along rather than tumbling and then when the water rapidly drops they are deposited laying flat on top of the gravel. The "tumblers" tend to become embedded between gravel, etc. I look for the skimmers and my eagle eyed wife finds the embedded ones. BTW, these waters can rise and drop 4-5' in a very short time.

Eye candy for sure!
that middle pot piece and the one at 3, 0'clock have some intersting designs and look to be pretty deep.
thos points almost look like they're made of amber and that one looks almost Daltonish.

You always find such an interesting variety of artifacts and I look forward to your posts Bud.

Thank you. Some of the Mississippi pot pieces do have deep incising. I think one reason is that they are very late and haven't river tumbled for so long. One of the pottery pieces appears to be basket stamped but I guess it could be be a paddle stamp. One of these days I'm gonna learn something about this pottery! The Dalton looking point is a Woodland form that appears around here and folks can get contentious about typing them. But our true deep south Daltons are typically bevelled with straight shoulders and pronounced basal grinding.

Great finds and lithics. The Woodland " Dalton" looking point is similar to our Yadkin eared, about the same time period. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful stuff. It amazes me how different the styles and materials are from what we find here, and we're not that far away.

Great finds! I can see why that is your favorite gravel bar.
