1st posse hunt of the year. A "Holey" day
The posse made it out for our first all members present hunt this past Monday, and we had a great outing. Our first spot (where Too-tall found the pendant last week) showed a few goodies, and I found the biggest rectangular bead I have found to date, along with a bird-bone bead (a little broken up) and the business end of a bone awl/blade.
After picking up lunch, we went to our second site, and I found 2 soapstone beads (which rate VERY high to me). Both are small, and the first is so skinny, it amazes me, maybe 1mm thick! The second, whose photo is there in-situ, is not much bigger in diameter, but probably 5 times thicker. Any stone bead is a thrill, so this was a particularly fine day for me. It is pretty wild how one can see these things in the rain cleared ground when they are so tiny, but here they are. Too-tall and Chardonnay did well too, but they can show their own photos. Go Posse! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice finds the soap stone from the coast range is darker than what we find in the foot hills area . I wonder what you would find if they let you screen .

Good eye Matt. Those little guys can be tough to see. Very nice finds. With all members of the posse present I imagine there was good food and beer as well.

Yeah, good deli chips and sandwiches, a not-very-good deep fried artichoke heart, and more beer than I would like to admit...candy, too!

Hi GBM. I think we have the "unknown stone bead" ID'ed. According to Heizer, Magnesite beads came in black when burned, so I believe this to be an example of "Pomo-black-gold". It makes sense, as the only stone beads from this area have been soapstone and magnesite, and that corresponds with the text.

Ghost posted the little white beads he found which I probably would not have spotted, but there's NO WAY I would have seen those little black ones! Good eye Nyatt!
