Broken axe

Found this broken axe last time out, its the first one of this type for me. Its grooved heavier on one side than the other. Any ideas why I dont come across many grooved tools in this area?

Sweet find!!! Judging from the talk you hear, I don't think grooved tools are particularly common in any locality. That's part of what makes them so cool, even when they are damaged. In 30 years of looking I have found nothing grooved yet. Thanks for sharing your find.

It's possible the Indians in your area had other ways to accomplish their needed tasks without the help of a grooved stone of some sort.

There's probably a number of reasons why you're not finding many of these. For instance: Many have already been picked up. Lack of available suitable stones. Reduced tillage farming practices don't bring them up like they used to either. And like already stated, maybe there just aren't that many of them in your area to begin with for whatever reason.

I think in my case, I work hard to seek out sites that have low to no pressure on them. And in some cases that have never been systematically hunted before. How do I know this, because their are axes still lying around. Believe me, they are the first type of artifact noticed and procured by any and all who come across them. I have one site where I have found 10 of them early on in my hunting of it. But none for awhile now, as I have pretty well thinned them out most likely. Didn't take me long either. But thankfully it still provides decently in other ways.

One can still of course make the occasional or random axe find anywhere though out in Indian country. I hope you can come up with a newly discovered site that will change your fortunes for you. Good luck to you.

Thanks everybody, the areas i hunt have been gone over by other people im sure. Both farmers Ive talked to said they have found axes while turning over there fields, but, they are prized and far and few between. I have seen some beauties on this site, just have to keep looking, I feel pretty good about finding that axe now, broken or not!
