Hi jbridered... Since I am equally curious about your piece, I took the liberty of posting your pics on thefossilforum where some of the pros live and play... so far, no cigar - other than a strong statement that it was from something organic... Check it out... Maybe you can fill in some of the blanks

yep still curious myself, reminds me of a stone my brother found , looked like a curling stone but rounder on top and bottom, took it to museums and showed everyone we knew, finally a guy who was looking at it cut it open with a rock saw , boy was my brother P.O, turned out to be a gall stone from a horse, couldnt beleive it came out of a horse, but it did , he later talked to a girl who once lived at the ranch, ended up giving both halfs to her , she said it came out of her horse, i wouldnt cut yours open , someone earlier mentioned sea urchin spine, it rand a bell deep in my head like i saw one like it befor somewhere, i vote sea urchin spine, or petrafied cocoa pod, looks like cocoa pod

I've seen something like it somewhere before and just can't place it. I'm no fossil expert but I think that has organic origins, somehow.
It originally made me think of a spike broken off the back or tail of some dino critter. That little squarish "base" also reminded me of something that is supposed to be lost, like a porcupine quill, only heavier. It also has a color and glow that reminds me of amber. It has a texture that reminds me of bony reptile skin. It is cool and I doubt it's just some piece of chert as many have said. Could be, I guess, but I don't think so. Let us know if you figure anything out. Maybe take it to a paleontologist at the local university and see what he/she thinks. |
