Found this rock at my farm artifact dig in southern Ohio. Looks to be something?

looks to be a Pestle.. but some of the markings suggest it was a "Multi Tool" ...

Is that hematite? maybe it was a kind of ochre crayon and the iron seeped out of the rest of the surface. Of course I'm not sure how that works, I just saw red and that's the first thing I thought.

I think you're referring to ochre. That's probably not red ochre.

The red stuff could be the original color of the stone and is worn from the rest of the stone?

That's what I think.

Definitely something that was started but maybe not finished IMO. Still cool though.

With all those fine lines, looks like a fairly soft rock, maybe steatite or soapstone?? Certainly an artifact!!

Keith, what you have is an unfinished Tube Pipe made from some Ohio Pipestone. I would recognize that material anywhere and that's exactly what it is. Very cool find buddy!!

Thanks for the information Steve! I would like to see a pic of a finished one. They must be fairly large. I would never had guessed the material. Thanks again for the ID!!!
