Type Help
These two points are surface finds from dimmit co near carrizo springs. One last week, the other a couple of years ago. Both have basel grinding, the one on the left is thinned and has a bit of a flute. Both are fairly rough. I look forward to your comments. Bp

Being from Carrizo Springs, and having examined 1000s of points from Dimmit County over 50 years, I will offer the opinion that (1) they are not Paleoindian; (2) the one on the left has been reworked, as you can see the recent chipping all around the edges, contrasting with the patina on the body surface; (3) they don't fit any type, and (4) I imagine they are both heavily
reworked, reshaped points, a technology very common in the region since they didn't want to have to make another new point tip out of the Uvalde Gravels lithic source! I hope the one on the left was nowhere close to any property owned by the late Charlie Harr, renowned barber and effective with a big nail in doing the type of resharpening on the left specimen! He took broken DM county points, spiffed 'em up, and shipped them off to the Arkansas dealers so active in the 1960s! TRH |

Sir, thank you very much for your comments. I accept them as gospel and have changed both of them in my log from "Unidentified" to "Resharpened".
They were found on the Covert Ranch at the end of the county road (173 ?), west of and about half way between Carrizo and and the 90 degree turn on 277. I find few points there in contrast to the number I have found on the Martin Ranch south of town just a few miles away. Most finds are quite crude. I am not certain where barber Harr hung out. Thank you again for your comments. WW |
