Broken Point?
Hey everyone. Just starting to poke around the mountains here in the LA area. I found a couple pieces recently but nothing quite complete enough to give me the confidence that I'm actually on to something. In the same area I found what looks like the bottom half of a point, with a couple deep pits on one side, and a small flake. Just trying to confirm before putting more time into the area. Thanks.

Yes the first one is a broken artifact that has fire damage. That is why it has the pits and cracks. The other piece could be a flake blade or tool of some sorts. That place is not a waste of time and well worth another look. Look real close for small arrow points.

Thanks for the replies. This is a great forum, lots of nice folks. I collected a bit when I was a kid in Missouri and I think I'm gettin' the bug again. The pickins are pretty slim here in SoCal but I'm determined to find something complete.
That's interesting about the fire damage. Did this happen by a wildfire after it had been discarded? |

Welcome to the board from another So Cal member. The fire pops (round pits) are from being in a campfire. Although I guess it is possible a very hot brush fire could cause it alos. Most likely though from an indian campfire. The first artifact looks like a biface made into a broken drill, not a point (too crude for this area). The other is clearly a flake. Please post what you find.....rare to see So Cal material on this board.

Ben brought the broken point by the shop today and we chatted about "pointy rocks" .. examining the heartbreaker under a Magnifier and had a good idea that it was a Houx.. but laid it on a sheet of paper traced the outline and then drew in the broken section.. Yeap, it's a Houx...
Ben & i chatted and are planning on hunting together next week.. taking him to the High Grave location I've posted about here numerous times, we've gotten some good rain this week, so the odds are favorable that we should find something... ![]() good to met a Fellow Flyfisher/Point Hunter in person.... Thanks for coming by Hollywood!!!! ![]()
