Knife or Scraper?
I found this a few years back in a farmers field in Allen County Ohio. I have found several points in the same field.
This was found in a sandy area which I thought was strange for being farmland. It is 2 1/4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide at it's widest point. It appears to be worked all the way around the edges. I'm guessing the lines left on the angled side were a result of the material being worked. Any help with an ID and time period is most appreciated. |

looks like an expedient side-scraper made on a flake, actually a bulb of percussion. Looks like one of the paleo/early archaic tools I've found.

I agree with Tom. Very nice Side Scraper and could be Paleo or Archaic depending on the context of the find and associated artifacts. It looks like it even has a Spokeshave worked into one side.

IMHO : Earlier Archaic. An early stage removal in the (opportunistic) reduction (as opposed to planned) of a large mass. The heavy rippling and tearing lines indicate hard hammer percussion ; the large platform and edge retouching are typical EA.
Essentially a usable piece saved from breaking up a much larger nodule/block. |

Nebsees, nice early piece. I think the steep beveled edges are generally considered used for planing wood. Of course that's pure speculation. What surprised me is that you found the sand to be an unusual occurrence. As the glaciers receded, they dropped lots of sand and gravel deposits in their wake. Allen County is 50 miles due west of me and there are a number of end moraines that stretch across this part of Ohio from glacial retreat.

My hunts are concentrated in a very small section of Allen County. I guess I need to explore a bit more!
