Not really what is it but what was it going to be.
Hi all,
I'm a newbie and thought I would jump in with a fun little find from a few weeks ago here in South Texas. A quick background, I'm new to the terminology of collecting and don't know all the names of points and such. However I can assure everyone my heart is in collecting, nothing I would rather do than hunt. I collect fossils, petrified wood, and anything of the native people's. Now to the point! This little goodie looks like it turned out to be a dud and was of course tossed. Here's the question, "What was it going to be?". The stone is a light and dark grey, smooth with a slight little roughness, and it measures 1 3/8" long x 5/8" wide x 3/8"-1/4" thick. If anyone has a couple of minutes to voice an opinion I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks, ![]() CE P.S. Sorry if it is overkill with the photos but I wanted to try and show all angles. |

I would chalk it up as a piece of debitage

Thanks everybody!
Maybe it is just a really unusual fractured flint by mother nature. The feel of those edges just made me feel like "keep it" verses "toss it". I know it is hard to see in a photo sometimes what you can in the hand. I added a couple of other photos lightened up a bit to try and show the edges of the widest side. Have a Merry Christmas, CE |

Could be a geofact or debitage.

Hopetofind, Where I live is an ancient quarry, well the flint is varied, comes in a number of colors, and sometimes is in a matrix like concrete with flint stuck in it like it was flaked for sure. Two or three sides will be chipped over and over like the piece of flint was worked and reworked. So much will depend on other pieces you find, where you find it and so much more. Photos never give the whole picture and it is always possible that it was used. That said it doesn't appear to be a used tool. Everyone here has posted possible tools and everyone here has been wrong at one time or another. The key is to learn, study, look at the books on Texas points and tools. Have fun!
