I agree with Tdog on type. Looks like a heavily reworked Brewerton side notch. I've got some similar material from Pa. and I always thought it was chalcedony. I think smokey quartz is a possibility though. I've never really figured out exactly what it is.

I'm pretty sure Novaculite isn't found in Pennsylvania so it probably is either a smoky quartz od chalcedony.

Here are three examples of what I think is the same material. These three were found near Harrisburg along the Susquehanna river.

Well, I'm no pro at any of this material ID but I do know quartz when I'm lookin at it and that's not quartz--smoky, rose or any other. A large percentage (90-95%) of what I find here is quartz and quartzite. Also, novaculite doesn't grow around here either but I still manage to find a few pieces now and then. I see hinges on novaculite very similar to that on this piece frequently, usually reminding me of "sheeting off" from a strike rather than an abrupt shelf but not always. Never seen hinges on quartz like that. Not that familiar with chalcedony but if that's what it looks like, I'll take yall's word. I probably have some too, just don't know what I'm lookin at.
