Any Idea About These?
After all these years I still have no idea what these are. I have seen them in the museum in a display but the gal had no idea either. They are not worked or chipped but they are somewhat polished and smoothed. I've never found one outside a camp. Any idea?

I've heard two different things about what these are. First thing is obsidian needles, the other is pieces of a historic wind chime. Google those two things and I bet you can come up with more info. I've never found any myself, they are pretty cool!

Thanks Floyd. Mystery solved.
When you put the right words together you have something to google. I'll have to go with all the above. Obsidian Needles/wind chimes. The obsidian must make a better sound than chert. I know where there are more. Thanks again. |

My first thoughts were lancets. No?

Natural obsidian needles.
A major source is the Warner Mts. in N.E. California. |

Hello ltf
No they are not sharp. Very smooth, not rounded but no sharp edges. At the same time they don't seem to be naturally smoothed or weathered. |

Picture large obsidian rocks in an obsidian flow. Some become splintered, forming dozens, if not hundreds, of these needles. When you dig them up, some of the rock may be intact, while the bundles of needles are still in place. The moisture, sand, and silt has worked its way between the needles, thousands of years ago. Thus they appear weathered, have patina, and are not sharp. |

Sure they could have been smoothed naturally but the natives used them for something. Wind chimes seem like a likely purpose. I'm sure there were other uses too. |

I don't understand why no one believes in the likelihood that these are lancets. Wind chimes???? Please!!!!!!!!!
