Uh oh, you said flake core...others are saying something else. Now I'm all confused. Thanks for the input everyone. This is such a cool piece. Really wish I could pinpoint what it is...I've tried googling these terms and stuff. Is there an online resource for ID'ing native American artifacts?

There are sites out there that sell these type of things. Some times I check them out when doing research on items that I have found. Try google on that subject and then compare to what you have. I dont want to give the sites out cause I dont know if I am allowed to do so. If it is a chopper like a lot have said it will be worth some dollars then. I didnt think chopper when I first looked at it but it does look like one. I found a big one last month but isnt worked as nice as yours. Great find!

Would a "flake core" such as this be suitable for chopping? Could a "chopper" be further refined to create another tool? Could a preform for a spear/dart point be used as a knife? Food for thought.

Its primary purpose would have been as a source of flakes for whatever cutting, scraping &c, jobs came along. Very high quality-looking flint.

It could have been secondarily used for chopping, cutting &c., but it isn't likely that someone would have carried it all the way from wherever the source of it was just to chop stuff.

FWIW

Uniface and Tdog - great responses. I guess that's why you guys do this type of hunting. The mystery behind the tools you find...

I appreciate everyone's responses.

The value as in dollars is what somebody is willing to pay. Rite now stone value is so cheap in sales eye appeal is everything. Your item has a lot of eye appeal. Most scrapers are running 10 to 50.00 depending on quality how bad somebody wants it. But most of these type of items will only fetch 15.00 to 20.00 at the most. Unless you could prove what period it came from and found it with something else of more value. Still a nice item. I find value in the hunt more than money my self.

I completely agree. I've kept all of my points and tools so far. And all of my metal detecting finds. No way will I Sell them. The hunt is what it's all about.

Thanks again. You all are a great help.
