Any idea what this is? I found it in a cotton field in North Alabama. Is it man made? There is no other flint in the entire area of about 150 acres that I could find. I'm assuming natives from years ago lost this. Your thoughts? Thanks!

Looks like a nice pre-form ( a roughed out/unfinished piece of chert for trade or later finishing), great material!

Thanks buckeye! Worth holding onto? Or is it basically just a neat rock?

In my thoughts any thing that has been worked is worth holding on to. It is very nice material for sure. As in value for dollars not worth much but very nice to look at. Keep Looking might find some other better ones.

Beautifull chopper, looks high quality chert too definetly worth keeping. If I were you id give that field another, closer look. Where theres one artifact theres most likely more.

It could be a Chopper or or Hand Axe of some kind. Tools like this were usually used to break open bones so they could get to the marrow.

Fascinating information! Thank you so much. You all are so knowledgeable about these things. Since I am out searching for metal in the ground so often I come across the occasional relic from the ancients. It's amazing holding something that hasn't been touched in thousands of years.

Be carefull its addicting ;-) They ate everything an animal could give them and what they couldnt eat they used to make tools, clothes, cordage and so on. Choppers and or hand axes would certainly have been used to get to the marrow in bones aswell as many other cutting and or chopping tasks, JMO
