axe in the making or geofact?
I found this a couple of years ago on a turkey hunt in the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. I also found lots of pestles and mortars in the same area, but no points. I was wondering if this is a early stage axe or just a rock? At what point in the pecking did they start the groove? Or could it just be an early stage celt? Not polished but seems to have the shape of an axe. Thanks for looking!

I'm not really seeing anything in the way of peck marks. The middle picture would suggest a sort of pestle if it wasn't so dang wide. So I would say goofy shaped geo...

I'd lean toward it being an axe in progress if there was a context like "lots of pestles and mortars in the same area. I'd imagine someone who is well versed in that areas hardstone artifacts could get a magnified view of the surface and tell you for sure.

Since it was found in context maybe it could be an axe preform. Lets say that they picked it up knowin that, with minimal work, it would make a good axe. But they just never got round to makin it into an axe. I say keep it with this in mind.
