is this an Opal?
I found this on a site awhile back and I didnt really look at it before I put in the chip box. But now that I cleaned it and took a close look it has my attention. It has fire in it like an opal but it has facets like a crystal. Does anyone here know what it might be? The pictures do not do this thing justice at all.
Thanks Guys |

I don't know but we find garnets in my area that are faceted like crystals very similar to yours.

Yep Ive found a few garnets myself but this thing is different, Ive never seen one that has fire in it like an Opal. Its hard to tell from the pictures. If nobody can identify it I will take it down to the lapidary store and let you guys know what they say. Thanks |

Could be fire agate. They have fire similar to opals.

Kickacat (that must mean something?) Nice item you have. Might fall in the Garnet family but most are green unless stained by iron oxides which are red.
Opal could be part of it as in this sample of purple chert with opal from the dallas's area Columbia R M |

Kickakat...It might be a fire agate, but looks more like Beryl or Carnelian to me...
MikeE...Where around Dallas did you find that chert w/Opal vein? Would love a sample of that for my collection... Last edited by bar2kl; 02-07-2012 at 05:59 PM. |

I was there in 98 and again in 2007 and made friends with a young rock hound who lived with his parents still and his/their whole back yard was full of piles that were found locally. I happened on a chunk of chert that was interesting and this was inside when we broke it. The nodule was like a flattened football and streaked with purple showing thru a white cortex. Where it came from originally? East of the Dallas area for sure. He sold the Opal within minutes to a local guy. It was about 2 inch thick and 3X5 Search ebay , sometimes it shows up. M |
