Mortar or a nutting stone?
Hey everyone, I just joined the site and am really excited to be here posting. I thought I'd share my most interesting find. While I haven't spent near as much time as many of you here, I'm quickly becoming obsessed! I really enjoy going through old threads on here, there is so much to learn! Back on topic, I found this sitting right next to a stream like somebody placed it there and hadn't touched it since. I'd done a little research, thinking it was a mortar stone. Especially because of how there seems to be an area for the material being ground to fall out of the grinding area. But I've never seen a mortar similar to this. But I recently learned what these nutting stones are, and they look more similar but still not quite the same. Any interpretations? I'll try and get a couple better pictures up soon.

I got no idea. I know nothing about that kind of stuff. And if you wondered why I posted its because I just wanted to say this, it really looks like an ancient chicken egg holder.(jk, but its cool bro)

That stone is a bit bigger than the average nutting stone, but it's a size that kinda unusual from the ones I've seen, def artifact related though.

Welcome to the site. Nutting stones have a dimple on them caused by striking the area with a pounding motion causing a very rough surface that isn't smooth like the one you have. I would think that yours is closer to a mortar than a nutting nutting stone and here is one that I found that is very similar to yours for comparison.
